The story of M-Ledger and how it inspired CountPesa.

M-Ledger

In late 2013, an innovative application caught everyone's attention at Safaricom's AppWiz Challenge: M-Ledger. Developed by Dynamic Data Systems, not only did it place second in the competition, it won the team a cool KES 1.2 Million.

Following the competition, the app continued gaining popularity, reaching up to 30K downloads on play store. Safaricom realised the app's potential and in late 2014, acquired Dynamic Data System's IP of the product.“Our partnership with Dynamic Data Systems signals our increasing commitment to build capacity in the local start-up community”, said the late Bob Collymore, Safaricom CEO at the time.

Safaricom M-Ledger Features

The app allowed users to view past transactions on a single view from their mobile phone. It gave us a glimpse into how seamless expense tracking could be. We all remember our minds being blown the first time we saw how much money had gone through our accounts, and how much we had transacted with specific people.

At its peak, the app reached 500k downloads on play store, before abruptly disappearing in 2020.

Discontinuation

The app's discontinuation was influenced by Safaricom's strategic shift towards consolidating its offerings into more integrated platforms. The introduction of the MySafaricom app, followed by the M-Pesa app, marked a new era where the functionalities of M-Ledger were absorbed but not distinctly highlighted. This left a segment of users yearning for the specialised service M-Ledger provided.

Be the change you wish to see

Many times, I have tried using expense tracking apps to manage my finances. Unfortunately, the habit never sticks. I would always forget to do it, forget transactions and eventually I would just give up. It required too much discipline and effort.

I have come across a number of expense tracking apps that promise to be able to link with your bank accounts and automatically track transactions, however this feature is always limited to western countries.

I have always envied this. Why is it not possible in Kenya? I knew for me to make expense tracking stick, it had to be easier. This is what compelled me to build CountPesa.

CountPesa

CountPesa is an Android expense manager, budgeter, and analytics tool that operates by automatically syncing with your M-Pesa messages. Beyond tracking expenses, you can also:

  • quickly categorise transactions with preloaded categories or customise your own.
  • automate categorization for frequent transactions to save even more time.
  • set budgets and visually see how your spending compares to your targets.
  • add additional details to transactions to jog your memory on what you spent money on.
  • backup your data to maintain a record of your financial history and growth over time.

We are always given a tonne of information by the platforms we use to transact. This information comes in the form of messages and statements. Though useful, the format doesn't allow us to learn much from them. CountPesa is an app that transforms this data into powerful financial insights privately on your phone.

Gain control over your finances today

By understanding where your money goes, you can make more informed spending decisions and easily identify where to save more.

Download CountPesa Now and transform the way you view and manage your money.
